On Saturday, April 11, 2009, I had the honor of officiating a gorgeous wedding ceremony between Jim and Linda. It was a grand affair at the Lighthouse in Chelsea Piers. Linda and Jim are an incredibly sweet and optimistic couple. The following article appeared in the NY Times on Sunday, April 10, 2009.

Dr. Linda Law and Jim Mui were married Saturday at the Lighthouse at Chelsea Piers in New York. The Rev. Michelle Smith, an interfaith minister, officiated.

Dr. Law, 29, is keeping her name. She is an internist at University Medical Center in Princeton, N.J. She graduated from the City University of New York and received a medical degree from the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn. She is a daughter of Winnie Law and Dr. Sing Wu Law of Alpine, N.J. Her father is an internist in private practice in Manhattan, where her mother is the office manager.

Mr. Mui, 30, is a financial analyst at JPMorgan Chase in Manhattan. He graduated from New York University. He is the son of Tsui Fong Mui and Suk Hay Mui of Ridgewood, Queens. His mother retired as a seamstress at Lookout Sportswear in Manhattan. His father retired as the owner of Cherry’s Chinese Food in Metuchen, N.J.

A Secret Wedding in a Secret Garden

Is there a place in New York City that has special signifigance to you? Have you ever considered turning that place into a wedding venue?

Sylvia, an architect, and Steve, a Latin scholar, have their own individual way of appreciating the Cloisters. After being together for twenty years, the two decided to make their love 'official' and wanted to have a secret ceremony in the place they love to spend time together. Along with two witnesses, Steve and Sylvia cozied up in their favorite corner of the courtyard and exchanged vows and rings. It was a very beautiful and significant ceremony. Since they decided to hold the ceremony on a Tuesday morning, there were not many people visiting the Cloisters and they had a bit of privacy for their nuptials.

Since I began officiating in 2007, I have had the honor of officiating many weddings. I work with approximately to thirty couples a year; however, at the beginning of 2009, I took time off to give birth to a gorgeous baby girl. Each and every wedding that I officiate is a joyful experience and following are a few highlights:

1. The first wedding that I ever officiated was for my very good friends, Aushra and Aleksander. Aushra is a former student of mine. When she asked me to officiate her beautiful wedding in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn, I was delighted. It was through the planning of her wedding ceremony that I fell in love with officiating.

2. The backdrop of Ilona and Maciej's wedding looks like a scene out of a movie! They chose to get married at the Fulton Ferry Landing. The misty day added to the enchantment of the ceremony. Ilona was a beautiful bride and Maciej was extremely dapper. The way that they gazed into one another's eyes as they exchanged vows made everyone's eyes fill with tears. I feel honored that I was part of their loving ceremony.

3. Jessica and Bryant had a lovely fall ceremony at the Ladies Pavilion in Central Park. The weather was gorgeous and the backdrop of the park added to the beauty of the wedding. They flew in from Washington D.C. and wanted to have an intimate ceremony with their closest friends present. The iron gazebo is located next to Lake Hernshead. It is a gorgeous (and quite hidden) spot that is immersed in the nature of Central Park, and has a spectacular view of the Manhattan skyline off in the distance.

Ceremonies Officiated by Kim

After being together for 40 years Grace and Emil decide to make it official and tie the knot. With family and close friends present, they were married on Valentine's Day at the Valbella Restaurant in Manhattan. Grace was a stunning and elegant bride who made everyone cry when she made her appearance. Everyone was so happy and excited for the bride and groom. It was an honor helping them celebration of love for one another.

Erica and Brant got married October 25, 2008. They had an intimate ceremony at the 41 Greenwich restaurant. The ceremony was on the patio with candle light and friends and family surrounding the beautiful couple.

Elisa and Michael got married in October in Manhattan. They had a beautiful rooftop wedding at the Thompson Hotel. It was really exciting to be able to greet the guest with a welcome statement in Thai. Elisa and Michael had the unity ceremony of the Puang Malai Ceremony which is a Thai wedding tradition, the garland is placed around the couples shoulders by the parents, to wish them good fortune in their life together.

On Monday, March 2nd, we were contacted by Jennifer Tis, the editor of the weddings section at The New York Post. She was interested in featuring some of our newlyweds. Two of the couples that I married were selected.

Samir and Sabina had an intimate ceremony held at the Ladies Pavilion in Central Park. They wanted to have a ceremony with close friends and family because this summer they will have a Hindu Ceremony in Canada with over 600 guests. Instead of exchanging rings, they chose the Sand Unity Ritual. They also included the Box of Good Wishes in which they wrote letters to one another. During the ceremony, they passed the box around and had each guest hold the box and send them good wishes for a happy marriage.

Derrick and Lisa were married in an intimate wedding at the Brooklyn Bridge Park amongst very close family and friends. In August, they will have another ceremony that I will conduct as well. The August ceremony will be a larger celebration and Lisa's parents will visit from Taiwan.

Ceremony Types

The most sacred part of a wedding is the ceremony. Although wedding ceremonies vary among different religions, cultures and preferences, they usually all include the exchange of wedding vows, presentation of rings and an official pronouncement by a religious figure or a wedding officiant with authorization from the state. We have many samples of ceremonies to select from. First, decide the type of ceremony in which you are interested.

Do you want a spiritual, religious or a non-denominational ceremony? Are you interested in traditional or non-traditional vows? Do you want something simple like a civil ceremony or do you want a customized ceremony including poetry readings and symbolic rituals?

After you decide the type of ceremony in which you are interest, select which elements you want to include. We have many samples; however, if you do not see a ceremony that suits you, you can create your own. We will supply you with a ceremony guideline to aid you in deciding which aspects you may want to include. Once you choose the elements, you can alter order of the format and select the wording. We have many examples of additional wording for each part of the ceremony.

We were contacted to perform a live wedding on national television!

On Friday, February 6^th, TheWeddingChannel.com contacted us to perform a live wedding ceremony on Valentine’s Day. TheWeddingChannel.com was partnering with the CBS Early Show for the ceremony.

A few days later, they realized that one of the anchors, Erica Hill, was a wedding officiant and decided to have her perform the wedding.

On Friday, February 13^th, I was asked to be a stand-in to perform the ceremony because they were not sure if they would be able to register her in time. It turns out that she officiated in another state, but never in New York. In the end, they were able to register Erica in time so my services were not needed, but I felt honored to have been asked.

I watched the Early Show and learned so much from the anchor that performed the wedding. I especially liked how she made references to the couple on a personal level. She included many details of their relationship.

In this spirit, I have created a personal statement guideline and questionnaire and have included it in our ceremony booklet.

Wedding Ceremony (Philosophical)

In his Symposium, Plato wrote an account of discussions based on the nature of love. It contains speeches by a group of men that gathered to drink wine in Athens. Aristophanes, one of the men at the symposium, explained in his speech the reason people say they feel "...whole when they have found their love partner" (Wikipedia). Although it was forewarned to be a bit absurd and was written sometime around 385 B.C. or close to 2400 years ago, many of the notions hold true to this day.

I wrote the Philosophical Ceremony as a dedication to all of those who feel that they have found the person who completes them in every way. It can be used as a non-traditional, non-denominational, interfaith or spiritual ceremony. There is a candle unity as well as three poems written into the ceremony.

Philosophical Ceremony
(Candle Unity)

Statement of Purpose
We are assembled together to proclaim the making of one from two. (Groom) and (Bride) are now fulfilling an ancient expression of love.

Plato wrote in his Symposium, “Each of us when separated, having one side only, is but the indenture of a person, and we are always looking for our other half. … And when one of us meets our other half, we are lost in an amazement of love and friendship and intimacy, and would not be out of the other’s sight even for a moment. We pass our whole lives together, desiring that we should be melted into one, to spend our lives as one person instead of two, and so that after our death there will be one departed soul instead of two; this is the very expression of our ancient need. And the reason is that human nature was originally one and we were a whole, and the desire and pursuit of the whole is called Love.”

(Groom) and (Bride) have found each in the other, their other half, the one that completes them and makes them whole. They have chosen to share the rest of their lives together fulfilling the ancient need to become lost in love and friendship and intimacy.

Candle Unity Ceremony
(Groom) and (Bride), the two lighted candles symbolize your individual lives before today. I ask that you each take one candle and that together you light the center candle. Lighting the center candle represents that your two lives are now joined as one and the brightness of the light will shine throughout your lives and give you courage and reassurance in darkness and warmth and shelter from the cold.

If Children Are Involved
(Child/ren) please take a candle and add your light to the center candle. The lighting of the center candle represents not only the union (Groom) and (Bride) in marriage, but the unity formed in this new family. You will now shine as one family.

Ring Ceremony
You have chosen to exchange rings as a symbol of your unity.

Unity Ceremony (Sand Ceremony)

The Sand Ceremony has been attributed to a custom practiced by the indigenous people of Hawaii. In Hawaii it is common that weddings take place on the beach. The bride and groom are barefoot during the ceremony and sand is taken from beneath their feet and is poured into a container or large shell to symbolize the couple's unity.

The Sand Ceremony is a lovely way to symbolize your unity. It can be incorporated into any type of wedding ceremony. You can use sand from the beach or sand dyed in your favorite color(s). The vase that you pour the sand into will become a keepsake of your symbolic unity.

The Sand Ceremony

The officiant will say the following:
(Bride) and (Groom),today you join your separate lives together. The two separate cups of sand symbolize your separate lives (and separate families). They represent all that you are and all that you'll ever be as an individual. They also represent your lives before today. As these cups of sand are poured together, the individual grains of sand will still exist, but will be joined together as one unit. Just as these grains of sand can never be separated and poured again into the individual cups, so will the love and bond between the two of you render you inseparable.

You can use water or wine in place of the sand.

Another nice idea is to include children that are being joined into the new family.

First Example
(Children’s name/s), your mother and/or father and love you very much, and want you to know that you are and will always be a very important part of their lives. Will you please pour some sand into the vase along with your good wishes? That would mean so much to them. (Parents then hug and kiss their children!)

Second Example
Just as we have now bound (Bride) and (Groom) to one another, we will now celebrate the union of (other family/child/children) into this covenant. The couple will first pour their sands into the vase, showing that their marriage is the foundation of this family. Their sands mix together and symbolize their bond of love and respect that can never be separated. As (family member/child/children) now add his/her/their sand, we are reminded that though we are all different people, it is our individuality which adds a unique color to the tapestry of the family. Like the sands poured before it, so these sands will also mix and be unable to be separated.

Wedding Ceremony (Spiritual)

Katy and Ilya's wedding ceremony was intimate, simple and lovely. The setting that they chose was a rustic gazebo, surrounded by lush greenery in the heart of Prospect Park. The early morning melody from the birds chirping and the waterfall from the ravine added to the background music. They chose the spiritual ceremony that includes a flower unity ceremony. All of the details that they added to the ceremony were incredibly thoughtful. They wrote inscriptions on paper hearts to one another. Katy wore a vintage lace dress that looked as though it was made especially for her. She made her own bouquet with a variety of yellow flowers and gathered them with light blue ribbon. She used the same ribbon to line the bag that held the flower petals for the flower ceremony.

Statement of Purpose
It is a time of celebration, for two people have come together and found mutual joy. They have shared their lives and decided to create a covenant in body and spirit.

Flower Ceremony
Officiant scatters flower petals in a complete circle around the couple and says:

May you live within a circle of love and may your unity be a thing of beauty and sweetness. May your love dance in eternal circles of time, with the dance of the earth, with the sacredness of life."

Statement of Purpose
Today we are gathered on the Brooklyn Bridge to celebrate the union of (Groom) and (Bride). As this bridge connects the island of Manhattan to the island of Brooklyn, we are gathered here to connect together the life, love, respect and trust of (Groom) and (Bride).

Once simply known as “The Great Bridge,” this bridge symbolizes patient stability; it is the synthesis of art and engineering, and represents a passage from the old to the new.

Let this symbolism be reflected in your marriage as you remember to be patient of each other and provide stability for one another. As this bridge has stood the test of time and inclement conditions, let your marriage stand strong against times of hardship and may you never cease to craft and build upon the strength of your partnership. Your marriage, like this bridge will link together the past, present and future of your individual cultures, traditions and history into one unified and solid formation.

Eloping in NYC (Free Venues)

Did you know that there is no charge for getting married on the Brooklyn Bridge as well as other New York City Landmarks?

There are many free venues in and around New York City.

The Fulton Ferry Landing is free, as is the Brooklyn Promenade. You can also get married in any city park such as Central Park, Prospect Park, Madison Park, Battery Park for free if your wedding party is less than 20 people.

If your party includes over 20 guests, you will need a permit which is available at NYC Dept. of Parks & Recreation 30 days before and is only $25.

Eloping in New York City (Step-by-Step)

Contact us immediately to secure your date and time.
Decide on a few locations for your ceremony keeping in mind the number of guests that you will have in attendance. If you will have more than 20 people in your wedding party, you may need a permit for some locations.
Gather identification such as a valid driver's license, a non-driver's identification card, learner's permit (NY State only), Active Duty United States military identification card, valid passport, U.S. Certificate of Naturalization, valid U.S. Permanent Resident card, valid U.S. Employment Authorization card, birth certificate and divorce papers (if applicable). Expired forms of identification will not be accepted.
Decide if you will change your name. See Name Change Options on the Office of the City Clerk's official website.
Purchase a $35 money order to pay for the marriage license from a post office, bank or drugstore. You also have the option of paying by credit card.
Go to one of the City Clerk's Offices with your partner in person to apply for your marriage license 24 hours before the ceremony. The license is valid for 60 days.
Choose one or two legal witnesses over 18 years of age. If you do not have a legal witness, let us know and we will secure witnesses for you.
Decide if you will exchange rings.
Enjoy your personalized wedding ceremony.
Sign your marriage license along with the witnesses and wedding officiant in black ink only.
Make sure the official date and time is incuded on the license.
Have the wedding officiant make a copy and mail in the license in the self-addressed envelope provided by the City Clerk's Office within 5 days of the ceremony.
Wait 2-3 weeks to have the license mailed back to you.

What is your background?

My background is in education. I was an educator both here in the United States and overseas for over 15 years. I taught elementary, middle and high school as well as adults. I have worked in public and private schools. I taught at international schools in Asia and Africa. I returned to the United States to pursue my master's degree from Columbia University.

While living and working overseas, as well as traveling extensively for over ten years, I was able to experience weddings and unions from all over the world. I have experienced many wedding practices and would love to assist you in incorporating a wedding tradition or custom that is symbolic to you.

How did you begin officiating?

In 2007, one of my former students was getting married and asked me to officiate her wedding. In the process of preparing to officiate her ceremony, I realized that this was my calling. Since her wedding, I have had the honor of officiating many different types of ceremonies. Each and every ceremony that I have been part of has been so special!

What are your beliefs?

I feel that spiritual and religious beliefs are personal. As an interfaith minister, I feel comfortable working with all religious affiliations as well as with those who do not adhere to any religious denomination. I appreciate the individual needs, beliefs and practices of all of my clients.
